Directed by Herbert J. Biberman, Salt of the Earth (1954) is a landmark drama in American independent cinema, celebrated for its intersectional depiction of labor rights, racial equality, and feminism, as well as its unique production history during the Red Scare.

Based on the actual 1950–1951 strike against the Empire Zinc Company in Grant County, New Mexico, the narrative centers on Ramon Quintero, a Mexican-American zinc miner, and his wife, Esperanza. When local zinc miners walk off the job demanding equal pay, safer working conditions, and indoor plumbing matching those given to white Anglo miners, the company responds with an injunction banning the workers from picketing.
To bypass the injunction, the miners' wives step in to hold the picket line instead, as the legal order explicitly restricts only the male employees. This shifts the struggle from the mine entrance to the domestic sphere, forcing the traditional husbands to manage households and childcare while the women lead the public political fight.
