Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette, also released as The Bicycle Thief in North America) is a 1948 Italian drama directed by Vittorio De Sica. Written by Cesare Zavattini based on a novel by Luigi Bartolini, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces in cinematic history and the foundational film of the Italian Neorealism movement.
Bicycle Thieves redefined global cinema by proving that a deeply moving, universal masterpiece could be made out of a simple, small-scale human dilemma.
It won a Special Academy Award (before the official Best Foreign Language Film category was established) and topped the inaugural Sight & Sound critics' poll for the "Greatest Film of All Time" in 1952.
